Blazing World

2020

The flag takes its title from the 17th-century novel by Margaret Cavendish, who is known as a forerunner of feminist science fiction literature. The book tells the story of a world where society works harmoniously thanks to the abolishment of social divisions. Through the flag, Jolanta Nowaczyk manifests a demand for “a different world”. The word blazing suggests that the world as we know it will explode or burn down.

* At the exhibition we present a copy of the flag – the original was hand-stitched from found scraps of fabrics.
