NOWY ZŁOTY – NEW GOLDEN / CEREMONIAL

The CEREMONIAL is an exhibition that consists of 11 artworks in the form of flags. The presented works refer to social and political issues – commenting on topics connected with the pandemic, migration situation, refugee crisis, instability of systems, and the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine. They show the necessity for changes in language, attitude toward other people, and nature.

The moment of exhibiting the flags created by artists gains the status of a solidarity ritual and has the character of a post-solemn act. The flags remind about the values of collective memory, not only during festive activities but also in everyday city life. Within the framework of the CEREMONIAL the gallery becomes the pedestal for the artworks. Attention is therefore diverted from what is inside the gallery, but also from what is individual and private.

The CEREMONIAL is one of the two elements of the program of NOWY ZŁOTY [eng. NEW GOLDEN], an informal exhibition space operating since 2019 in a kiosk located in Wrocław, and whose curatorial team consists of Magdalena Kreis and Yuriy Biley. Within the CEREMONIAL series, 11 flags have been presented so far, shown between the exhibitions organized inside the kiosk. In the Art Walk Gallery, all flags are presented at the same time, side by side, thanks to which the exhibition can be seen as a form of a review of topics that are important from the artists’ perspectives.

The system of selection of flags for the CEREMONIAL assumes an expansion of the range and decision-making process of the curatorial team. Out of three existing artworks in the form of flags selected by the team, the artist who exhibited their flag earlier picks the next one.
