Balls – Magda Bielesz

2019-2025
oil on canvas

In my works, the balls symbolise two worlds.
In one, I am a mother, and in the other, I am a painter.
These two worlds are distinguished by two surnames — as if two identities were contained within one person.
I wish to give everything of myself to both of these worlds. The growing pregnancy belly and the project taking root in my mind are represented through inflatable beach balls.
Over time, the balls have evolved and become abstract.
The coexistence of realism and abstraction reflects the tension between control and spontaneity.
The two worlds are formally symbolised by realist and abstract paintings. My inspiration came from the first drawings of my son, drawn with an uninhibited line, free from all the rules I had learned at the academy. By painting many works simultaneously, I create arrangements that are both compositions and playful experiments, transcending academic rules in favour of pure expression.
This is a cycle about the creative balance between two worlds, but also about how they intersect and mutually inspire each other.
