In Ukraine
2019
The flag is the statement of an artist who has been living in Poland for several years, on the issue of language rules that reflect beliefs and political attitudes. She started a debate on the preposition “in” (w), which should be used instead of “on” (na), a version popular in Polish in the context of Ukraine. The work highlights the need for change, both in language and thinking about eastern countries and their post-colonial history. In 2022, after the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine started, the Polish Language Council officially accepted the Polish form w Ukrainie (“in Ukraine”) as linguistically correct.
* At the exhibition we present a copy of the flag – the original artwork is on display until mid-June in Podgląd Gallery at Plac Unii in Warsaw. The work is a part of the Collection of the ING Polish Art Foundation.
