Long necks of deer and hinds stretch out from the walls.
It’s not alive — but it’s meant to look like it is. With shiny eyes and glossy fur.
It’s hard to let go, to surrender, to allow something to pass, to fall apart.
Instead, we preserve it, fix it in place, mount it on a wall — so it might outlast the hunter.
And there they hang, for a hundred years or more.
They will never return to dust, nor undergo decay, to fulfil their place in the natural cycle written into every living cell.
